Pelagic Magic Summer Highlights '15 by Jeff Leicher
We’ll arrive in Honolulu on the return from Truk and spend a relaxing night in Ha-waii’s capital. The next day we set off for Kona and four nights at the Royal Kona Resort. Our first afternoon in Kona we will participate in the late afternoon/evening Manta dives, observing in awe as manta rays glide in from the darkness to feed on the microscopic plankton attracted to your light.
The next day includes two dives in the crystal clear waters of Kona, Hawaii where you may soar through schools of tropical fish, swim through lava rock arches, or visit green sea turtles resting on the reef, followed up by the world famous Pelagic Magic Night dive. Floating in the crystal clear black abyss, drifting peacefully along a current line, are tiny organisms seem-ingly made of light and rainbows making their way through life around you. Starting just after dusk, you will float tethered offshore in the deep dark sea, usually not descending any lower than 50 feet. The mesmerizing jellies put on a colorful dis-play that can only be described as breathtaking. Some zooplankton, that only rise to the surface to feed when the lights go out, will be visible to us. Our lights are but small twinkles in the vast blackness of the sea. This magical display is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Our Kona adventure concludes with two more days of exploring the diving Kona has to offer before heading home. You can hike through a lush rainforest, watch molten lava flow into the sea from a boat offshore, learn to make a lei, sample a variety of tempting cuisines, rent a car to see the spectacular views at Mauna Kea Summit, visit Kaloko-Honokohau Nation-al Historical Park, or pamper body and soul in a healing spa at the ocean’s edge. Don't wait, reserve your spot today!
